2025 Snapshot - Public Sector
In 2025, Victoria’s public secondary schools showed a wide range of academic results. At the upper end were 9 exceptional schools whose performance clearly stood out. These schools combined a strong median VCE score of 36.0 with a notably high share of students achieving study scores of 40 and above, typically around 29.9%.
A further 17 schools fell into the Strong band. Their results place them well above typical state outcomes, with a median VCE score of 32.0 and around 10.3% of students achieving a 40 and above study score.
The Above Average group includes 41 schools. These schools record a median VCE score of 30.0 with approximately 7.0% students achieving a study score of 40 and above — figures that sit just above statewide norms.
Performance becomes more modest in the lower bands. The Below Average band contains 73 schools, and the Low band a further 84 schools, each showing reduced median VCE scores (28.0 and 26.0) and a smaller share of students achieve study scores of 40 and above (3.6% and 1.8%).
At the lower end of the spectrum is the Very Low band, which includes 53 schools. Median outcomes in this group (median VCE 23.0, and share of students scoring 40 and above 0.7%) represent the tail of the statewide distribution.
For overall context, the median VCE score across all Victorian secondary schools is 29 (ranging from 18 to 39), and the statewide median percentage of 40 and above study scores is 4.4% (ranging from 0% to 44.4%). These benchmarks provide a useful reference point for understanding how each school fits into the broader distribution.
